Facebook My New Crush -

It is spring break this week at the college and between the meetings that administrators all over campus are trying to cram in I have played a great bit with Facebook.  (Notice my nice new facebook badge in the side bar. )

Not only have I added a crazy number of applications to my personal profile but I have also created a page for Computing Services.  I added the computing news feed to populate the notes application automatically but I am not sure what else to do with this.

Any suggestions?

Facebook – is it a noun or verb?

So we all know that facebook (and its class of software)  is the craze and if often looked at as a waste of time for the youngens by us digital immigrants.

Then I heard the NPR story on Social Networking the next big thing and decide to give it a go and figure out what it is worth.

In the end, I am starting to understand the importance and the leap is much easier for someone already using the web 2.0 tools to understand the value added of everything in one place.  Particularly, if you do not have philosophical issues of a gated community (which a social network service is even more gated than the community of us with access to the world wide web) and you are not geeky enough to want to integrate the services of web 2.0 on your own.

The downside is privacy I mean having everyone know everything about my online actions as mundane and responsible as they are is a little creepy to me but hey if I really cared about privacy would I use my shoppers club card or blog?

Any way it feels good to write again.  Thank God for the quiet hour before Christmas break.

Merry Christmas (or Happy Holidays)  to you and yours…

Facebook | Allegheny College Student Technology Group

Filed under: Facebook/MySpace, General Thoughts, Practical Uses — James @ 9:26 am

For many years now folks from computing have supported a student organization called the Student Technology Group (STG) as a sounding board and cultivator of new initiatives related to student technology needs and use.  Over the years interest and participation in the group ebbed and followed over the years but lately it had been a struggle to get students interested enough to attend.  At the last meeting there were only the 3 student leaders and the group advisors. That being said I am racking up the meeting as a success as this came from it.

There are 20 members in the group and one post that has some good info that we can work with.  It will be interesting to see if this produces the interactions that we have valued in the past.
